Richard is a passionate supporter of basketball since playing his first game in the mid-1960’s. Richard commenced playing District Basketball in South Australia for Adelaide Basketball Club and then moved to various other clubs prior to relocating to Melbourne in the early 80s and playing senior basketball. Having children playing Represetative basketball in South Australia & Victoria and wanting to develop a playing career, Richard realised a need for a cost-effective, highly customer focussed programme to assist student athletes, so, he founded Australia & NZ Basketball Scouts in 2012 and has helped many athletes achieve their dreams of playing in US and Canadian Colleges.

Shaquille Maharaj (Western Australia)

Shaquille Maharaj, a former collegiate athlete assisted by Australia New Zealand Basketball Scouts and has now taken on the role as the Western Australian representative.

Shaq has had an unorthodox basketball journey to say the least but the experiences that he’s had along the way have shaped him into not only the basketball player he is, but the person he is today.

Through Australia & New Zealand Basketball Scouts, Shaq commenced his college basketball career as a Freshman at Ohlone College in Fremont, California. After completing his time at Ohlone, Shaq then travelled north to join the amazing squad At Camosun College in British Columbia. Unfortunately, after 3 years, Covid brought Shaq home to Perth earlier than expected.

Shaq finished out quite strong statistically and returned home to train with the Perth Wildcats in the NBL. Whilst trying to secure a development player position, Shaq did use that time to improve his game and as a result, landed his first NBL1 contract with the Central District Lions in the NBL1 Central competition in South Australia.

We welcome Shaq to our team of Scouts and is looking forward to the next step in his journey and glad to add this role to his resume next year – Shaq is a passionate and determined player which flows into his coaching and hoping to use these qualities to assist young athletes who have the same aspirations to go to college just as he did so that they can pursue their basketball dreams and get an education all at the same time.
