I coached Harry during his first year of playing competitive basketball in 2021. Prior to that he had played other sports but only played basketball with some friends at a club level. Thankfully, some of those friends convinced him to get serious about basketball and he tried out for our representative team. Harry was a long, somewhat awkward kid with no clue about what was happening on the basketball court. But he had a combination of size, bounce, soft hands and mobile feet that were very intriguing to me as a coach. By the end of the first training session, he had improved. Noticeably. That rapid rate of skill acquisition and basketball IQ progression continued throughout the season, and he quickly became a starter for our team. It was a bit like watching a baby giraffe that could barely stand in the morning to the one running around the savannah like a pro by the evening. Harry continued to learn and develop his skills. He put in a lot of extra time and effort training. He very quickly picked up more advanced techniques and subtle nuances of the game. Although he has great length and size, like most kids playing in Australia, he has no problem stepping out and facing the basket. His greatest value, however, is on the glass. He has that natural ability to be in a position to find the ball and the physical attributes to attack it both on the O and D boards. During his latest season he averaged 13 points and over 15 boards (6.5 offensive) per game. Most recently, Harry has pushed himself in the weight room and has developed into an absolute beast. His combination of size, strength, bounce and a ceiling that has not been reached should be of interest to any program looking for success. Harry has that inner drive to improve and has been an absolute joy to coach. He is a good student and comes from a great family. He will be a great asset for whichever program is lucky enough to land him. Patrick Carey |
